This theme was at the center of a recent HIMSS-sponsored webinar hosted by Mobile Heartbeat featuring leaders from HCA Healthcare. One clear theme supported a point I have made for years: moving an application to the cloud does not mean it fully uses cloud-based features.
Many healthcare applications have moved to the cloud while still relying on older systems and processes. As a result, they may run in the cloud without the strength, flexibility, and automation that modern healthcare needs.
Jason Dennis, AVP of Public Cloud, Site Reliability and Platform Engineering at HCA Healthcare, stressed the need to assess whether platforms make full use of native cloud services. They should also support automatic failover, flexible scaling, and built-in security.
For healthcare organizations, resiliency is no longer just an IT goal. It is a patient care need. Communication platforms must continue working during disruptions and avoid single points of failure. They must also support reliable care when clinicians need them most.
As healthcare relies more heavily on digital processes, operational resiliency is no longer optional. It is essential to keeping patient care running.
Interoperability Is a Patient Safety Imperative
Healthcare organizations continue to invest heavily in EHRs, nurse call systems, patient monitoring tools, and other applications. The challenge is not a lack of technology. It is making sure critical information moves smoothly between systems.
Ahmed Elbeshbeshy, Director of Nursing Technologies, Engineering & Automation at HCA Healthcare, pointed to a reality many healthcare leaders know well: failures between connected systems can quickly become patient safety issues.
Whether it is a patient call, a telemetry alert, or a Code Blue notification, information must reach the right caregiver without delay. That is why organizations should treat integrations as core infrastructure rather than optional add-ons.
Leading organizations are building closed-loop communication processes that confirm teams receive, acknowledge, raise, and act on alerts. They should also measure success by whether workflows continue, not only by application uptime.
Closing Healthcare’s Last Mile
One idea that stood out to me during the webinar was healthcare’s “last mile” challenge. Across the industry, organizations have invested heavily in gathering clinical and business data. Yet too often, that information remains trapped in separate systems and cannot reach the people and processes that need it most.
To me, the last mile is where information becomes action. Organizations close this gap when the right patient context, practical insights, and workflow data reach clinicians in a clear, timely, and useful way. As Heather Johnson, AVP of Nursing Technologies at HCA Healthcare, shared during the discussion, the opportunity is to bring that information directly into the communication experience. This is where care teams already work together and make decisions.
